2010 is definitely the year of independent artists. In a world where music seems to have lost its spiritual essence, many indie are at the forefront of change. They share freely without the fear of not conforming and as such, force listeners to question their misconceptions about art. Today let me tell you about Catya Maré.
Born in Denmark and now living in California, Catya comes from a classical music background and started playing the violin at age 4. “My violin is my voice. I treat it more like that than a usual violin. Both when writing a melody and when performing. It sings,” says Catya. “I like to combine the spiritual and the sensual dimensions in my music… hope to help others to connect to their spiritual self… to enrich other people´s experience of life…”
Catya worked solo on her three albums (Light Longing, 2007; Remembering the Day, 2008; and Destination Love, 2009), except for the final mastering. “I am lucky to know an excellent mastering expert in the UK (Loz Gill, www.fatasfunk.com). So we just email large files back and forth until I am happy with the result.” And when one knows how much work is involved in the recording of a CD, her dedication and passion can only be applauded. As a matter of fact, the entire world seems to encore a lot these days…
In 2007, she won the Sonic Bids Award for Composition, and one of her songs (“It Came True”) was featured in Vic Alexander´s film Butterflies in the Wind at the Ava Gardner Film Festival in North Carolina. The following year, she was nominated for the Hollywood Music Award. And in 2009, she won the Billboard World Songwriting Contest (“Electronica/Soundtrack” category), as well as the Hollywood Music in Media Award (“Ambient/New Age” category).
Listening to Catya is like a breath of fresh air. Entering her world is dangerously infectious and may cause you to experience spurts of ecstasy. Her vision is beyond the confines of our limited comprehension. In three words, she commands attention. And, despite her huge success, she is very approachable and down-to-eath: “The music business is a jungle. Don´t trust anybody who tells you that ‘you are the next BIG thing… just pay me a little and I’ll help you succeed, will pay you back later… sign here and we´ll make it happen…’ I learned it the hard way. Good news though: today, with the fabulous opportunities the internet provides, you can do a lot yourself. It takes time and effort, but it is possible. And nobody can then rip you off anymore.”
